Are you tired of doing the same thing everyday?.... Infomercials!

Have you ever wondered about how advertising companies can persuade people to purchase their products? Today we watched a clip from an infomercial and discussed the various techniques that are used.  First, we talked about the root words in the word infomercial. We found the word "info" and "mercial", it's an information commercial!

After students watched the infomercial clip for the product "Slushy Magic" they all wanted to purchase it!  How did the advertisers do this. Here is a list that we brainstormed together.

We also discussed why it is important to be critical of the advertising that they see on a daily basis. Students shared their ideas:

- some products might not work properly
- some products might be very expensive
- some products might not be necessary because you can probably use something you have around the house already
- some advertisers want you to think that your life will be better with their product

Next, students will be participating in a design challenge using 3-D shapes and will have to persuade their audience to purchase their product through an infomercial that they will create.

Sparkle, Chirp, Floral, Sour, Rough!

We are working on exploring words that relate to our five senses. We discovered that when we incorporate these words into our writing, it allows the reader to feel like they are in the location that was written about. Yesterday we brainstormed interesting descriptive words.

We also practiced using a thesaurus to find synonyms for our descriptive words.

Students were given a writing prompt for homework and they had to improve it by adding detail, and descriptive words that related to our senses. Today students are in small groups providing descriptive feedback their peers.

The Snow is Our Canvas

Today we braved the cold and went outside to unleash our creativity on the perfectly white, untouched snow!  Students were split up into groups and given a bottle of blue, yellow and red coloured water. They had to cooperate and share the colours with other groups. Students then had to collaborate and come up with an idea for an object, symbol or scene. Students also had to use primary and secondary colours in their art pieces. Check our our art below!

We love expressing our creativity in new ways!

Pancake Tuesday!

Today we were lucky enough to feast on some delicious pancakes for Pancake Tuesday. We discussed the season of Lent which is beginning tomorrow with Ash Wednesday.
